Nature-based solutions pre-survey report from Nairobi

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are strategies that use nature to solve problems like flooding, pollution and climate change. These solutions include urban green spaces (parks, gardens), green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems, community gardens, tree planting initiatives and wetland restoration. In addition, these solutions help clean the air, prevent floods, and make the environment more sustainable.

The purpose of this survey is to assess the community's knowledge of NbS and how familiar they are with these solutions. The study team selected the Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya as the study area. Due to its geographical location along a river ecosystem, Mathare experienced impacts as a result of climate change hazards and the existing practice of NbS along Mathare and Gitathuru Rivers. The main objective of the pre-survey is to assess whether NbS component should be incorporated to the overall Muungano Settlement Profiling Tool. Below are the specific objectives:

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of NbS in Mathare Settlement.

  2. To examine the influence and role of gender inclusion in NbS.

  3. To analyze the NbS practices implemented along the river ecosystem in Mathare.

The results will help identify which NbS could be most effectively implemented in the settlement area, contributing to a more resilient community. The work also supports the overal aim of the Tuwe Pamoja project to upgrade the Muungano Settlement Profiling tool by incorporating the NbS aspect to it, having a unified singular tool.
